Todd - Your guest seemed intent on blaming Israel for the violence, even going so far as to claim the solution is easy as long as Israel agrees to Hamas' political demands, which seems very one sided. It is these politics that the parties have been fighting over for over 60 years and it seems unlikely that an organization whose charter calls for Israel's destruction could be a constructive member of a peace settlement. Indeed, I believe they have only ever offered truces, not full peace. I don't know if Israel's response is proportionate, or whether it was fully justified in all its horror. However, I do know that if my city (New York) were under constant rocket fire I would demand the government put a stop to it by any means possible. Short of giving in to Hamas' demands, what choice does Israel have? Either give in to terror or attack back. Just as the situation in Gaza is terrible, so is the situation in Southern Israel. Also, I want to note that I am appalled that this individual is director of the University of Wisconsin's Middle East Program. I would hope that such a prestigious school would take pains to put a less biased individual in that important a position. Clearly the Middle East is going to play a huge role in the future of our world and we need the very best academics and policymakers working on it, not one-sided individuals.
